Reeds Cottages in Park Road
Description
This wide angle view shows the entire row of 'modest tenement' cottages at 60-70 Park Road in the Hampton Wick conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. They are believed to have been built by John Reed, who ran a china and glass business in Kingston market place, after he purchased the land at auction in 1828, and are known collectively as Reeds Cottages. The first six, now numbered 60-70 and clearly identifiable in this photograph by their lower roof line, were known originally as Park Row Cottages. Although each occupied a footprint of only ten by twenty-four feet, unusually they had deep gardens to front and rear and it is thought that some were occupied by market gardeners working for local producers. The taller cottages were known as Park View Cottages and built around twenty years later. All are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit and look across the road to the perimeter wall of Bushy Park and the expanse of allotments that occupy the eastern corner of the Park.
