Cottages in Park Road
Description
This view shows a row of mostly Victorian two-storey cottages at 70-80 Park Road, Hampton Wick, in the Hampton Wick conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames. They face the perimeter wall of Bushy Park where an expanse of allotments gardens occupy a section of its eastern corner. All are listed locally as Buildings of Townscape Merit. The semi-detached pair to the left of view at numbers 78-80 display the name Park Hatch 1896 and are believed to have been built by Alfred Huntingford, son of Jesse, one of Hampton Wick's notable Victorian-era developers. The group of three at numbers 72-76 are known as Spring Grove Cottages and are believed to have been built in 1858 by William Salter Minchin, who ran the nearby Nursery Ground. Number 70, set back from the road with the long front garden is believed to be earlier still and one of a row of cottages known as Reeds Cottages, named after their property developer John Reed, a china and glass dealer based in Kingston, who purchased the land at auction in 1828.
