Barclay's Bank in The Causeway
This view shows the Barclay's Bank building at 1 The Causeway, Teddington, on a prominent corner site with the commercial thoroughfare of Broad Street, in the conservation area of the same name in Richmond-upon-Thames. It is the only stone-fronted building in the immediate area and is of late nineteenth century. It is listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit. Apart from the installation of two ATM machines, one replacing the Barclay's Bank sign in the Doric portico, the exterior is unchanged today. To the left of picture, Broad Street ascends to the bridge over the railway line and continues to Teddington's High Street. To the right, beyond view The Causeway joins Park Road and its historic locality and links to Bushy Park. The Victorian buildings and shops in view beyond the bank were demolished in the 1970s, as was the 1873 church of St Peter and St Paul's that was diagonally opposite Barclay's Bank, and replaced with the brutalist brick commercial development, Causeway House. Street furniture shown includes two striped traffic light posts, concete lamp posts, and a direction sign for the A308 routes towards Twickenham and Hampton Court.
