Title
Church of All Hallows vicarage in Chertsey Road
Description
This view shows the north and west faces of the Vicarage at 138 Chertsey Road, Twickenham. The Church of All Hallows used to be in Lombard Street and had already been rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the original church was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London. Demolished in 1938, Wren's tower was re-erected on its current site, formerly used as orchards before the construction of the Chertsey Road and adjacent housing during the 1930s, and a new church designed by Robert Atkinson. Completed c1953, many of the former Lombard Street building's furnishings were incorporated into the new building, including work by Grinling Gibbons. The Church of All Hallows was Grade I listed in 1952, listing number 1080836. The tower presents a prominent landmark on the A316 dual carriageway. There is no immediate reference to the Vicarage, but it seems likely to have been coincident design and build. Also in view to the left is one of the adjacent 1930s maisonette blocks on the south side of the Chertsey Road, and to the right part of the 1940s church building.
