Boathouses at St Helena Wharf
Description
This view shows the row of important historic boathouses at St Helena Wharf, Riverside, Richmond, looking northwards towards the eighteenth-century houses at St Helena Terrace, which are believed to post-date the boathouses. Located within the Richmond Riverside conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames which, in addition to having a number notable historic buildings, is a popular recreational space well served by good public transport links, boating activity, pubs and bars. Number 4 St Helena Terrace is most prominent in view, number 5 having a lower roof line than the rest of the terrace, which is obsured in this view by garden trees. All five properties were Grade II listed in 1968, listing number 1080822. Some of the boathouses are used for arts and crafts, and refreshment vendors. To the right of view is the perimeter wall of the White Cross Hotel, an important riverside public house also dating from the 1820s, which was Grade II listed in 1983, listing number 1250279. The traditional road surface of Riverside extends beyond the White Cross into Water Lane and is listed locally. At the far end of the boathouses, just out of view, is Friars Lane, which leads to Richmond Green, and Cholmondeley Walk, a historic riverside pathway extending to Asgill House on the side of the former Richmond Palace estate. Some casually dressed promenaders are walking towards the viewpoint, a couple eating ice creams, and a women holding a small child's hand.
