Asgill House in Old Palace Lane
Description
Asgill House in Old Palace Lane, Richmond, overlooks the Thames at Cholmondeley Walk and its history is well documented. Designed by Sir Robert Taylor and built c1760 on the site of the brewhouse of Henry VIII's royal palace, this distinctive villa was originally the home of Sir Charles Asgill, who was Lord Mayor of London during 1757-58. The building was Grade I listed in 1950, listing number 118412. This view shows its north-east rear facade overlooking the grounds of the house. The two-storey extension to the side of the house is believed to be a nineteenth-century addition, as is the remodelled roof line seen in this photograph. The house has since been restored to its original appearance and the extension taken down to single storey.
