Title
Ye White Hart public house and shops in Broadway
Description
This view shows the junction of Mortlake High Street, barnes, with White Hart Lane emerging from the right, and The Terrace beyond the shops, which overlooks the Thames. Most prominent in centre of view Ye White Hart was established apparently in its riverside location in 1662 and, as seen here, was rebuilt in 1899. Listed locally as a Building of Townscape Merit, it falls just within the Barnes Green conservation area of Richmond upon Thames. The buildings across the road to the right are 1/1a, known as The Old Boat House, and shops at numbers 3, 5, and 7 White Hart Lane, all still in use today, abeit with remodelled and painted frontage. These are also listed locally, although just outside the perimeter of said conservation area. The nature of the buildings seen to the left of Ye White Hart is uncertain but thought to be part of the Barnes council depot established in 1901, and they have since been demolished and replaced by Tideway Wharf, a residential development in the 1980s, although much of the original architecture of the adjacent buildings has been retained and remodelled in the current Tideway Yard complex. The view includes horsedrawn omni buses and carriages, interesting street furniture including road signs, and a number of pedestrians.
