Junction of Bridge Street, Hill Street and Hill Rise
View of Bridge Street, Richmond, looking towards Hill Street and Hill Rise. It shows the Art Deco Odeon cinema and Christies bar, part obscured by the mature trees in Bridge House Gardens. The cinema in Hill Street was built 1930 by Julian Leathart and W.R. Grainer and is described as one of only three surviving in Britain with 'atmosopheric' interiors. It was Grade II listed in 1990, listing number 1254263. The cinema is shown to be screening The Elephant Man, All That Jazz, and Being There, indicating it has been internally partitioned as a multi-screen cinema. The eighteenth-century public house is Christies at 1 Hill Rise, which was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1065431. It was once known as the King's Head and as of 2020 is called Bill's. Next to Christies is an eighteenth-century milestone obelisk commemorating the erection of Richmond Bridge; the obelisk was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1080869. Beyond Christies can be seen some of the eighteenth-century four-storey houses of Ormand Terrace, on the south side of Ormond Road, which are all Grade II listed. The Odeon is within the Richmond Central Conservation Area, while the other buildings are in the Richmond Hill Conservation Area of Richmond upon Thames. Also in view is an Austin Maxi and a woman walking her dog.
