Dating from about 1630, the screen wall, gateway and pavilions were Grade I listed in 1951; listing number 1079565. Built in 1629-36 for Sir Nicholas Rainton, Forty Hall was Grade I listed in 1951; listing number 1294469. It was built on the site of Elsyng Palace, which belonged to Henry VIII. In the twentieth century, Forty Hall was occupied by Derek Henry Parker Bowles (1915-1977) and his family until the estate was sold to Enfield Urban District Council in 1951. It reopened to the public in 2012 after extensive refurbishment and is operated by Enfield Council as a museum and community arts and heritage venue.
