Description
View of the octagonal cover of the Physic Well in Well Approach, Barnet. The structure of timber and herringbone brick covers a spring that was discovered about 1652. Beneath the cover are a barrel vaulted brick well chamber with brick floor and two shallow pools and associated pipework. The well house replaced one pulled down in 1840. Dating from about 1937, the Physic Well House was Grade II listed in 1983; listing number 1064804. The diarist Samuel Pepys records visiting the well on at least two occasions in 1664 and 1667.
