Title
St Elizabeth's Home in Mayfield Avenue
Description
St Elizabeth's Home chapel, Mayfield Avenue, North Finchley. The image shows the original chapel building brick cloisers with stone arches and flying buttresses. There appears to be a cast iron Victorian boot scraper in the bottom left hand corner. Originally built in the second half of the nineteenth century by The Society of All Saints Sisters of the Poor, as a home for incurables. In 1953 it was opened by the NHS as a facility for elderly females. In 1984 it was sold to developers for over £1 million and was completely demolished, including the chapel despite this being protected by covenant. It is now replaced by St Elizabeth's Court and Homan Court.
