Shops in Golders Green Road
Description
View of a shop building at 4-8 (even) Golders Green Road, Golders Green, including a branch of Lloyds Bank at number 6-8. The triangular building stands at the junction with Golders Green Crescent on the left. Number 4 is a branch of Northern Rock Building Society, which later became a bank but was taken into public ownership amid the global financial crisis of 2008. There are two or three storeys of other accommodation above the retail ground-floor. To the right at 2 Golders Green Road is a branch of Midland Bank in a building with a rounded portico using Ionic columns. A person wheeling a bicycle is seen on the pavement. Dating from about 1921 and by Herbert A. Welch with H. Clifford Hollis, the bank building at 4-8 Golders Green Road was Grade II listed in 1970, listing number 1061364. The building forms part of the Cheapside development, part of the Golders Green shopping centre which developed rapidly in the first decades of the twentieth century. The architects, Welch and Hollis, had worked with Parker and Unwin on the design of Hampstead Garden Suburb.
