Description
A view of the rear elevation of Avenue House, an Italianate villa at 17 East End Road, East Finchley. The image shows the two wings of the L-shaped building. It has about three storeys with a taller tower at the junction. It is stucco covered with tall brick chimney stacks. The corner facing the camera includes a cartouche with the motto "Regnant qui servant" (They rule who keep). Dating from about 1859 and much extended and refurbished by Henry Charles Stephens, heir to the Stephens Ink Company after he acquired it in 1874, Avenue House was Grade II listed in 1999, listing number 1387515. It has been municipal offices and now is used for conferences, functions, exhibitions and commercial filming. The gardens are open to the public. The estate around Avenue House was named Stephens House and Gardens in 2014.
