View of the entrance to the service tunnel beneath the gardens of Hillingdon Court in Vine Lane, Uxbridge, looking south. The brick-lined tunnel is believed to provide access for tradesmen to the basement under the house, probably to the kitchens. Large wheeled wastebins, probably for kitchen waste, have been parked along the left-hand side, seen with a single dustbin to the right, below steps leading to the gardens above the tunnel. The main house, visible beyond the Roman balustrading above the tunnel, is Grade II* listed, listing number 1080114. Hillingdon Court was originally built for banker, Charles Mills, of Glyn, Mills and Company, designed by Philip Hardwick c1858, before becoming a nursing home for the Roman Catholic order of the Sacred Heart c1920, and an independent school from 1978 owned by ACS (Anglo-Chinese Schools) International Schools Limited. The tunnel has since been decommissioned, the area levelled and given over to car parking.
