Fire insurance plaque on Headstone Manor House
Description
Headstone Manor in Pinner View, Headstone, Harrow, comprises three historic Grade-listed buildings: the moated Headstone Manor House, the Great Barn (formerly known as Tithe Barn), and the Small Barn. Formerly a working farm, since 1986 the restored Headstone Manor buildings and grounds have been in use as the Harrow Museum (along with the Granary, which was moved to the site from Pinner Park Farm in 1991). This image shows the Sun Fire Insurance Plaque number 663428, dated 1797, on west front elevation of the Grade I listed Headstone Manor House, the earliest surviving timber-framed building in Middlesex dating back to c1310. It belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury until 1546, when it was surrendered to Henry VIII. The house has been extended and altered by its successive owners; for example, the panelling in the great hall dates from 1631, and the brick facade from 1770s. The Manor House now serves as the main museum building. Prior to municipal fire services were formed British Fire Insurance metal plaques with the emblem of the insurance company were affixed to the front of insured buildings as a guide to the insurance company's fire brigade. Each insurance company maintained its own fire brigade, which extinguished fires in those buildings insured by them and, in return for a fee to be paid later, in buildings insured by other companies. The first to use the mark was the Sun Fire Office which was established in 1710.
