Title
Victoria Embankment from the shot tower looking to Charing Cross
Description
View of Victoria Embankment, Westminster, taken from the shot tower, which was on the south bank. The Lambeth shot tower from where this was taken, was a cylindrical tower used in the production of lead shot. It was built in 1826 and demolished in 1962 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. To the left is the original Charing Cross Station with 'SR', standing for Southern Railway, at the end of the roof. This was completely rebuilt in the late 1980s. Behind is the Grade II listed Charing Cross Hotel (listing number 1236707), which was built 1863-4. On the right are the light coloured wings of the Adelphi building, Grade II listed, listing number 1393391, built as a purpose built office block 1936-8 and designed by Stanley Hamp. A blurred tug hauling three lighters moves upstream.
