Title
Victoria Embankment from the shot tower
Description
View of Victoria Embankment, Westminster, taken from the shot tower, which was on the south bank. The view is across Waterloo Bridge, towards Temple tube station on its right. In front of this, the SS Discovery, Scott's vessel for his Antarctic expedition in 1901 is moored. She was moved to Dundee in 1986. Behind her is moored HMS President, built as a Flower class Q-ship in 1918, and then named HMS Saxifrage. After naval service, she was moored in the Thames and became the training vessel of the Royal Naval Reserve. The Lambeth shot tower from where this was taken, was a cylindrical tower used in the production of lead shot. It was built in 1826 and demolished in 1962 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
