Description
View from the east of Somerset House, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, with the statue of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the foreground. Grade I listed, listing number 1237041, Somerset House was built as The New Public Offices in 1776-96 by Sir William Chambers; the east extension for King's College 1829-35 by Sir Robert Smirke and the west extension of offices to Lancaster Place by Sir James Pennethorne, 1853-56. The river frontage is raised on a mighty basement/terrace, originally opening directly on to the Thames with watergates.
