Buildings in Stanhope Street
Description
View of 31 Stanhope Street, City of Westminster. The building to the left of the picture appears to be in a state of disrepair or demolition with a large wooden beam supporting adjacent number 31. A three-storey building with basement occupied by a ‘Working Girls House’. The Homes for Working Girls in London was established in 1878 by John Shrimpton and provided full board to each resident for 4s. 6d. per week, with rents of 2s. 6d. and 3s. a week, including the use of reading rooms with magazines and newspapers. Despite very long hours at work, many girls still failed to earn more than 4s. 6d. a week, and so could not afford to eat any more than breakfast and tea. Stanhope Street and the surrounding area was demolished in 1902 in order to build Kingsway and the Aldwych. This building was on the site of what is now Bruce House apartment block on Kean Street.
