Description
View of 9-15 Stanhope Gate, Mayfair (formerly Great Stanhope Street). Three-storey houses at numbers 9-10 built in 1757-8, with some early-twentieth-century alterations. Features include mansard roofs, dormer windows, porches with Doric columns, and cast-iron balconies. Grade II listed, entry 1236582. Three-storey house at number 11 with mansard roof, dormer windows and arched entrance with balcony above. Number 14 was opened briefly in 1917 as an Auxiliary Home Hospital to provide accommodation for eight convalescent officers. At number 15 in January 1918 Dame Katharine Furse G.B.E. established the first headquarters of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) serving as the inaugural Director. The buildings remain but apart from numbers 9-10 have been altered. A car is parked in the street.
