View of Storey's Gate
Description
View of 3 Storey's Gate, City of Westminster (formerly Great Stanhope Street). A red brick two-storey building with an entrance surrounded by a triangular pediment supported by round columns. Basements enclosed by railings. Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, founded in 1786 to coordinate office supplies for government departments, occupied these premises from 1855 until 1915 when it moved to Cornwall House on Waterloo Road. The two-storey Classical building on the right is the side aspect of Westminster Hospital, opened in 1831 and later becoming part of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where it can now be found on Fulham Road. A public urinal is situated between the two buildings and two men, one in a cap, the other in a Bowler hat are leaning on the railings looking at the camera. Formerly named Prince's Street, Storey's Gate was named after Edward Storey, Keeper of the King's Birds at the time of diarist Samuel Pepys, and was originally the gate at the eastern end of Birdcage Walk.
