Title
Building in Tufton Street
Description
Front elevation of 53 Tufton Street, Westminster, a three-storey brick building with shop at ground-floor level. Originally built by Sir Richard Tufton in the seventeenth century, Tufton Street was significantly redeveloped in the early-twentieth century. Number 53 stands alone, adjacent buildings having already been demolished and their sites fenced in. The structure of 53 is stabilised by wooden props to side and front elevations. Two windows are bricked up and a man watches from an open sash window. The shop is closed and shuttered with a fly poster for Herring Son & Daw, estate agents, and numerous adverts for Lipton's Tea. "Lot 2" is painted on the front wall of the house possibly indicating sale of shop contents. A second man leans on the nearby fence watching the photographer. Graffiti covers the other section of fence, mainly illegible, with three chalk profile portraits of men. 53 Tufton Street is no longer extant and was replaced in the 1930s by Tufton Court, a seven-storey mansion block. The east side of the street lies within the Smith Square conservation area designated in 1969.
