Church House in Tufton Street
Description
East elevation of Church House, 6-8 Tufton Street, Westminster, looking south. Tufton Street was originally built by Sir Richard Tufton in the seventeenth century and was significantly redeveloped in the early-twentieth century. Church House, headquarters of the Church of England, was built 1936-40 by Sir Herbert Baker and A. T. Scott and Grade II listed in 1987, listing number 1264037. The site of Church House includes Assembly Hall, chapel and offices, with Convocation Hall forming part of this east elevation on Tufton Street. Number 8 has arched windows to ground floor and number 6 has an oriel window to first floor. Both are brick with flint dressing to ground-floor level. The cast-iron gas lamp has a late nineteenth-century Brompton column and an early twentieth-century Windsor lantern and was Grade II listed in 2024, listing number 1491049. Church House was restored in 1949 after World War II bomb damage, is still extant and lies within the Westminster Abbey conservation area designated 1967. It remains the headquarters of the Church of England, with areas of the building available for private hire for conferences and events.
