Title
King George IV public house in Montpelier Square
Description
King George IV public house, 44 Montpelier Square, Knightsbridge. Formerly part of the Moreau family estate broken up in 1759, the Montpelier Square area was developed by John Betts and Thomas Weatherley Marriott in the early-nineteenth century. The King George IV at the north end of the square was one of the earliest buildings erected, c1827. The two-storey, flat-roofed building has a pub sign at first-floor level, a portrait of King George IV. The ground-floor windows have striped awnings and two small tables with open umbrellas and folding chairs are on the pavement outside. The umbrellas advertise Stella lager whilst the fascia reads Whitbread. Next door, the southern end of the Herz Garage stands at the corner of Montpelier Square and Trevor Place. The King George IV public house was closed in 1996, demolished in 1997 and the site rebuilt with two residential properties, which are still extant.
