Title
Buildings in Tufton Street
Description
Front elevations of 56-60 Tufton Street, Westminster, from Little Tufton Street. Numbers 56 and 58 are two-storey buildings with shops at street level, with a commercial building at 60. Originally built by Sir Richard Tufton in the seventeenth century, the buildings are in varying states of repair. The grocers shop at 56 is still trading, with goods in the window and adverts for Colman's Mustard, Colman's Starch and Brooke Bond Tea on the shop front. 58 appears derelict with shuttered shop windows and every pane of glass in the upper windows broken. The commercial building at 60 has a double gated goods entrance at street level flanked by two arched doorways, the right being bricked up. Upper-floor windows are curtained with flower pots on window sills suggesting the building is occupied. Beyond the roof of number 58 a telegraph pole is visible and there is a cast-iron gas lamp at the corner of Tufton and Little Tufton Street. The lamp was Grade II listed in 2024, listing number 1491066, and now located outside number 81. Only the east side of Tufton Street lies within the Smith Square conservation area designated in 1969. It was significantly redeveloped in the early-twentieth century and Little Tufton Street renamed Dean Trench Street. A large mixed-use block, Romney House, replaced these buildings in the 1930s, designed by architect Michael Rosenauer and still extant as a multi-dwelling residential property.
