Shops in New Bond Street
Description
View looking north-east, showing a terrace of buildings with ground-floor shops at 25-27 New Bond Street, Mayfair. Number 26 is a four-storey, mid eighteenth-century building trading as, "Tessiers" a dealer in antique jewellery. The former terrace house with a two-window range was altered in the mid-nineteenth century to include a ground-floor shop. There are shuttered semi-circular arched window spaces with a central entrance divided by Corinthian columns. Signs for "Silversmiths" and "Goldsmiths" can be seen. There is a sign advertising "Valuations For Probate". The winding mechanism for an awning can be seen at either end of the premises. "Tessiers" traded from the premises from 1852 until 1968. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224392. The ground-floor frontage remains in situ today. Number 27 is trading as, "Surman", where a line of spotlights can be seen above the display window. An arch-shaped mezzanine window can be seen above, where there are numerous small carved heads visible within the arch. Number 25 has a brick structure in front of the ground floor, where openings can be seen for ventilation. The ground floor was converted to a temporary public gas cleansing station in 1939-40 for decontamination in the event of a gas attack from the air. There is a men's and women's entrance. Three posters can be seen related to the general election of 1945. One has a view of three servicemen, with the words, "Help Them Finish Their Job!" and "Give Them Homes & Work" with "Vote Labour" below. Another has, "Vote For Howard" on it and a third says, "Wanted MP".
