Description
View looking south-west, showing a row of four-storey terraced buildings with ground-floor shops at 6-1 New Row, Covent Garden. To the left is a partial view of 6 New Row, which dates from the early-nineteenth century and is Grade II listed; listing number 1266688. Number 5 is trading as, "T. Reading", newsagent & tobacconist. The central doorway is flanked by a closed display window to the left and an open window hatch to the right. There are displays of books, magazines, newspapers and cigarettes with two spotlights visible above the displays. There is a sign for, "Player's Navy Cut" above the entrance. A selection of newspaper posters can be seen including, "Daily Sketch", "Radio Times", "Sunday Graphic" and "The Racehorse". The "Sunday Graphic" headline poster says, "Japan Hits A Brick Wall" and beneath the "Radio Times" is the headline, "Coronation Scot Broadcast Journey". A sign above the shop reads, "You May Telephone From Here" next to a sign for, "Wills Gold Flake Cigarettes". Number 5 has a ground-floor greengrocer's business where displays of fruit and vegetables can be seen including rows of apples and bunches of bananas hanging from hooks above. The letters, "OK" can be seen flanking the bananas. A row of paper bags can be seen hanging beneath the produce displays. A pair of lamps is hanging above the display. Several shop employees can be seen outside. A delivery bicycle and two-wheeled handcart are parked outside the shop. A box on the cart has the name, "M. Poupart" stamped on it. Two further delivery bicycles can be seen parked on the other side of New Row. Numbers 4-5 have late seventeenth-century origins with nineteenth-century shop fronts added. The two buildings are Grade II listed together; listing number 1224779. Number 3 dates from the late-seventeenth century and has a ground-floor shop partially obscured by a canvas awning. It has Italianate features with a Juliet balcony and geometric frieze visible. It is Grade II listed; listing number 1266687. Two delivery bicycles with baskets are parked outside. There is a partial view of numbers 2-2A, which are Grade II listed together; listing number 1266686. A sign with the word, "Repairs" can be seen. Number 1 has a single-window range and is Grade II listed; listing number 1224729. There is a sign for, "Ladies Hairdressing" above the closed shop. A sign saying, "Sold By" is visible. Part of a sun awning can be seen to the right of the view. There is a decorative street lamp in view, which dates from the early-nineteenth century and is Grade II listed; listing number 1366023.
