Title
Fenwick's store in New Bond Street
Description
View looking east, showing Fenwick's department store at the corner of 58-63 New Bond Street and 17 Brook Street, Mayfair. The store opened on this site in 1891 and was the first of its kind to open on New Bond Street. It initially occupied just the corner block at 63 New Bond Street and 17 Brook Street. Started by John James Fenwick in Newcastle in the late-nineteenth century, the business traded in high-end ladies fashions. The original five-storey building has Corinthian columns at first-floor level and a decorative frieze on the upper levels with a stone balustrade visible. At 18-21 Brook Street is a four-storey building with a ten-window range which was acquired by Fenwick's in the early-twentieth century together with 58-62 New Bond Street. Dressed mannequins and a display of hats and accessories can be seen in the ground-floor, plate-glass display windows to both the New Bond Street and Brook Street frontages. There are two large signs advertising the business at second-floor level to both frontages. A flag advertising the business can be seen at the upper corner level. The Fenwick name can be seen repeated above the display windows, where greenery can be seen. To the left can be seen buildings in Hanover Square. Street furniture visible includes, belisha beacons, keep-left bollards, no-waiting signs and ornate street lamps. There is a policeman on traffic duty. There are many pedestrians in view together with numerous vehicles including a number 25 bus and several taxis. A further line of parked taxis can be seen in Brook Street.
