The area is known as "Chinatown" and several shops to the right of the view include Chinese-owned businesses. 12 Newport Place is trading as, "Cantonese Chinese Restaurant", where Chinese writing can be seen above a ground-floor display window. Number 11-9 is trading as "Guanghwa Company" with Chinese writing above the display windows. Number 7 has Chinese writing above the shop front and on a vertical sign above it. Number 5 is a four-storey building with the ground-floor shop trading as, "Joe Coral" Turf Accountant. Number 3 is a fish and chip shop trading as, "The Fish Inn". Opposite is 8 Newport Place, a corner building with the ground-floor shop trading as, "John's Newsagent & Tobacconist". There is a sign above a display window advertising, "Evening Standard". The building is Grade II listed together with the neighbouring 27 Newport Court; listing number 1224688. Above are two large advertising billboards. The lower one shows an oval hanging sign depicting two glasses of "Guinness" beer below the words, "The Fisherman's Rest". Above is an advertisement for "Benson & Hedges" cigarettes, showing the ripples of a swimming pool with a depiction of a tin of sardines being unfurled. The artwork was created by Alan Waldie in 1978. Newport Court dates from the late-eighteenth century with number 26 also Grade II listed; listing number 1224719. Striped awnings can be seen above the ground-floor shops at 24a-26 Newport Court. In the distance is a partial view of the rear elevation of the Hippodrome Theatre. Built in 1895-1900 to designs by Frank Matcham, the building is Grade II listed; listing number 1066287. To the extreme left of the view at roof height can be seen the domed cupola of "The Crown" public house, which formed part of the Hippodrome Theatre block. There are numerous pedestrians and vehicles in view and many street lamps can be seen together with a telephone kiosk.
