Description
First-floor front room used as an office at Sotheby's auction house, 36 New Bond Street, Mayfair. Two people can be seen working at office desks, where various items of stationery can be seen including wire in-trays and a stapler. There are four telephones visible together with two typewriters. A fan, some boxes and an empty drinks bottle can be seen on top of some metal filing cabinets. A member of staff is using a typewriter and her chair has two cushions. Another member of staff is writing in a book. There is a picture hanging on a wall together with a pinboard with some posters on another wall. There is a bookshelf with books and a model doll can be seen above. There are two ceiling-hung lamps and two curtained windows. In the foreground can be seen a handbag hanging on a chair. Originally an early eighteenth-century terrace house, the building was altered in the mid-nineteenth century to become auction rooms. It had previously been used as galleries for the French artist, Gustave Dore, a parfumiers and a public house called, "The Black Horse". The cellars were used as stores for paintings when it became an auction house. Sotheby's moved to these new premises in 1917. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1266836. A partial view of numbers 138-139 New Bond Street can be seen outside.
