Shops in New Row
Description
View looking south, showing terraced buildings with ground-floor shops at 8-9 New Row, Covent Garden. Number 8 has late seventeenth-century origins with mid to late nineteenth-century alterations to the shop front. The business is trading as, "St Martin's Dyers & Cleaners". There are signs in the windows for dry cleaning and dyeing, invisible mending, repairs and alterations and re-linings. A sign in the glass door says, "The Play Room". A rack of dry-cleaned garments wrapped in plastic can be seen inside the shop. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224730. There is a partial view of 9 New Row, which was rebuilt in the early-twentieth century on the site of a former late seventeenth-century townhouse. The ground-floor restaurant is trading as, "Giovanni's". The business was established by Sicilian, Virgilio Ragona in 1952 and the family has been trading at the same premises for more than 70 years. The neo-Georgian shop front has small rectangular panes of glass. A panelled door to the right has a sign directing customers to a rear entrance in Goodwin's Court. In the windows are two menu cards and stickers advertising "Barclaycard, American Express" and "Diners Club". A hanging lamp can be seen outside the shop together with a spotlight. A card box can be seen outside the restaurant containing waste paper. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224846.
