Description
View looking north, showing a partial view of a pair of terraced buildings with ground-floor shops at 16-17 New Row, Covent Garden. A sign for, "Scottish Merchant" can be seen above the ground-floor windows of number 16. Clothing can be seen hanging on the inside of the closed door and amongst the items on display through the main shop window is a small toy polar bear and a chess board with playing pieces. Spotlights can be seen within the shop. Double entrance doors set back from the pavement can be seen. There is a sign above for, "Manor Laundry". There is a sign on the door with a cartoon view of a policeman visible. Wording accompanying it says, "Stop Bring Your Laundry" and "Suits and Coats Cleaned and Pressed". The building dates from the early-nineteenth century with later mid-century features added. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1266577. Today the shop is an art gallery. There is a partial view of number 17, which is trading as "J. M. Turnell & Co. Ltd", fruit and vegetable distributor. The company began trading from the premises in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1938 the company held a royal warrant for supplying fruit and vegetables to the royal household. The ground floor has the original warehouse frontage. There are metal security shutters in view and a hanging floodlight can be seen above the shop. A lion's head carving is visible, which was originally a pair set between the two shops. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224987. Today, the ground floor is a bookshop.
