Description
View looking north, showing a corner shop at 59 St Martin's Lane at the junction with New Row, Covent Garden. The display window facing New Row has advertisements for cigars and cigarettes including "Embassy No 6, Golden Virginia" and "Velvet". Large signs above are advertising "Benson & Hedges" and "Hamlet Mild Cigars". A hanging sign on the St Martin's Lane elevation is advertising "Rothmans King Size Cigarettes". On the corner shop door is a sign for "Confectionery" and "Walls Ice Cream". There are two fire hydrant plates visible on the New Row elevation. A burglar alarm can be seen above the doorway with the initials "AFA" on it. Two wrought-iron wall ties in the shape of a letter "M" can be seen. To the left of the view is a partial view of the New Theatre at 85-88 St Martin's Lane, built in 1903 to designs by W. G. Sprogue. It is Grade II listed; listing number 1264767. Today it is known as the Noel Coward Theatre. Next to it is the Westminster County Court at 82-84 St Martin's Lane, built in 1908 to designs by H. N. Hawks. It is Grade II listed; listing number 1236049. The reverse of a no-entry road sign can be seen in New Row. There are several parking meters visible together with a parked car in St Martin's Lane.
