Description
View looking south, showing a terraced house with ground-floor shop at 13 New Row, Covent Garden. It is a four-storey, late seventeenth-century building with the shop trading as, "Middlemass & Co". Empty display shelves can be seen in the window. There is a half-panelled wooden door to the shop with a fanlight above. There is a side entrance to the floors above. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224985. There is a wicker basket and a rubbish bin with no lid, outside the shop. To the left is a partial view of the "White Swan" public house at number 14. Dating from the late-seventeenth or early-eighteenth century, the pub has had various names, including "Lord's Tavern", "The Moths Hotel" and "The Swan Hotel". A masonic lodge used to meet at the pub in the mid-eighteenth century and the author, Dorothy L. Sayers featured the pub in her 1933 Lord Peter Wimsey novel, "Murder Must Advertise". There is a small circular sign in the window advertising wine. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224986.
