Shops in New Bond Street
Description
View looking south-west, showing a terrace of buildings with ground-floor shops at 138-140 New Bond Street, Mayfair. Number 139 is a four-storey, late nineteenth-century building with the ground-floor shop trading as, "S. J. Phillips Ltd", jeweller and silversmith. There is a pair of Doric columns either side of a display window with shuttered security windows. Displays of silver and jewellery can be seen inside. Above is a semi-circular window surrounded by a stone fascia. There is a five-window range. Geometric patterned stonework can be seen on the front elevation. There is a "To Let" sign visible. In the early-twentieth century, the ground-floor shop was the theatre ticket office of H. J. Adams. In the 1930s it became the head office of Cramer's music publishers and pianoforte saleroom. The upper floors were used as music practice rooms until the early 1960s when S. J. Phillips Ltd took over residency. Today the premises is a high-end ladies' fashion store. To the left is a partial view of 140 New Bond Street. It was built in Flemish-style brick and terracotta in 1896-97 to designs by F. J. Eedle & Meyers. There is a partial view of a sign for, "Hill & Sons", string instrument makers. Flowers and cards can be seen in the ground-floor window. The building has ornate carved decoration and friezes and is Grade II listed; listing number 1266794. To the right is a partial view of a four-storey building at 138 New Bond Street. Part of a sign can be seen above the shop front saying, "The Glove".
