Title
Asprey's store in New Bond Street
Description
View looking south, showing the front elevations of "Asprey's" store at 165-169 New Bond Street, Mayfair. The four-storey, late eighteenth-century building was originally built as terraced houses and later converted into shops on the ground floor. The arch-shaped plate-glass windows are separated by decorated and fluted cast-iron columns with arched heads. Decorative ironwork can be seen above. A flank of windows of a similar design continues at 15a Grafton Street at the junction with New Bond Street. A wall plaque commemorating the residence here of Sir Henry Irving from 1872-99 can be seen above first-floor level. The name, "Asprey" is repeated above the windows. Security grilles can be seen behind the windows with displays of luxury goods visible including silverware and leather goods. The luxury goods retailer has been trading from the premises since 1847 and has held various royal warrants as silversmiths and goldsmiths. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1224553. A pair of flagpoles can be seen. In the distance there are two wall-hung clocks visible. To the right of the view is 16 Grafton Street, a four-storey terraced house with basement dating from 1770, probably by Sir Robert Taylor. A cast-iron ornamental balustrade can be seen. The building is Grade II listed; listing number 1357037.
