Offices and shops in New Bond Street
Description
View looking north, showing a six-storey office block with ground-floor shops at 1-7 New Bond Street, Mayfair, at the junction with Burlington Gardens. The Art-Deco block was built in 1929 to designs by Edward A. Stone. The fifth-storey windows are in a Romanesque round-topped design. There are domed corner pavilions at roof level. The ground floor of number 1-2 is trading as, "National Provincial Bank". A sign above the entrance in Burlington Gardens says, "New Bond Street House". On both elevations can be seen large lettering for, "F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd". These were the main administrative offices of the company from 1929-1959. Today, the building is the headquarters of fashion retailer, "Ralph Lauren". Number 5 is a jeweller's shop with a sign outside saying, "Sir John Bennett". Number 6-7 is trading as, "Harborow's", a luxury leather goods retailer. There is a post box at the corner of the junction and a zebra crossing with a belisha beacon in view. Pedestrians and a street lamp can be seen. An Austin Healey 100 car is parked and a taxi can be seen. The post box is no longer there and was replaced in 2016 by a bronze sculpture of a horse and rider created in 1975 by Dame Elizabeth Frink which is Grade II listed; listing number 1461423.
