Buildings in Motcomb Street and Lowndes Street
Description
View of the front elevations of buildings in Lowndes Street, Belgravia, to the left and Motcomb Street at their junction. The four-storey buildings mainly have shops on the ground floor with apartments above. At the corner at 23 Motcomb Street is Gaye Macklin antiques with Aldo Bruno at number 22. At number 20 is Betty and Vera Vandekar, also an antiques shop. At the far right, partly visible, is Pantechnicon with a sign for Sotheby's auction house vertically on its end wall. Originally designed as Sotheby’s arts and furniture repository (Pantechnicon meaning all the arts), the former warehouse now houses restaurants and bars. A Greek Revival building dating from about 1830 and probably by Joseph Jopling, Pantechnicon was Grade II listed in 1958; listing number 1223569. To the left at 15 Lowndes Street is Wheeler's restaurant. A trench has been dug in the pavement in Lowndes Street with barriers surrounding two holes. At one of the sites are a pile of earth and some tools. Dating from about 1830, numbers 20-23 and 23a Motcomb Street and 15 Lowndes Street were Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1223570. A Fiat 850 coupe car is parked in Motcomb Street.
