Pantechnicon in Motcomb Street
Description
Oblique view of the front elevation of Pantechnicon at 19 Motcomb Street, Belgravia, a stucco-fronted building with giant Doric columns in this elevation and its name in a vertical sign. The name Motcomb Galleries appears across the front. Originally designed as auctioneers Sotheby’s arts and furniture repository (Pantechnicon meaning all the arts), the former warehouse now houses restaurants and bars. A Greek Revival building dating from about 1830 and probably by Joseph Jopling, Pantechnicon was Grade II listed in 1958; listing number 1223569. At the right of the image at 18 Motcomb Street is a three-storey building with the antiques shop of Leslie S. Scott on the ground floor. Several vehicles are parked in the street including, in the foreground, a Volkswagen van with soft covering and registration number YUV745. Beyond is a truck with the name of Shore Porters Society of Aberdeen on the front. Parked in front of Pantechnicon are a Volkswagen Variant estate car with registration number BRX844B and a Ford Thames van with registration number XLO644.
