Title
Houses and shops in Tavistock Street
Description
Front elevations of a terrace of shops at 11-19 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden, at the junction with Wellington Street. The street runs parallel to The Strand and was originally part of York Street, which was renamed and renumbered in 1937. A sign for York Street can be seen below the sign for Tavistock Street. The four-storey buildings were erected in the early-to-mid eighteenth century and initially used solely for residential accommodation. Alterations were made in the early-nineteenth century to create ground-floor shops. The street is close to the former Covent Garden flower and fruit market. The corner building at number 11 Tavistock Street has a ground-floor shop trading as Cocquerel's Sundries. There are two hanging signs advertising tobaccos. Another sign for H. Cosins and Co (Tobaccos) Ltd shares the shop premises with a separate door access. Number 13 has a sign saying, "Littlewood Bros.". Numbers 15 and 17 are occupied by flower wholesalers, trading as Forster and Robins. A sign above number 15 is advertising the rooms above to let. There is a partial view of number 19 and a pedestrian is standing in Wellington Street. Number 11 Tavistock Street is Grade II listed together with 28 Wellington Street, listing number 1066226. Number 13 is Grade II listed, listing number 1066227. Number 15 is Grade II listed, listing number 1066228.
