Title
Shops in Tavistock Street
Description
Front elevations of a corner parade of shops at 18-20 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden. The street runs parallel to The Strand and was originally part of York Street, which was renamed and renumbered in 1937. The four-storey buildings were erected in the early-eighteenth century and initially used solely for residential accommodation. Alterations were made in the early- to mid-nineteenth century to create ground-floor shops. Number 18 has a tea room on the ground floor and number 20, which was built by Charles Gray in 1855, has an office with frosted glass windows. Between them is a pillar with a crown motif and finial above. The parade follows the curve of the street and continues with number 13 Burleigh Street, which has several lamps above the ground-floor premises. There are boxes of flowers stacked on the footway. Two pedestrians can be seen together with a parked car and two vans. An early twentieth-century cast-iron street lamp can be seen, which is Grade II listed; listing number 1066229. Number 20 Tavistock Street is Grade II listed, listing number 1220346. The buildings today have been renamed Harlequin Court.
