Title
Shops in Tavistock Street
Description
Front elevations of a terrace of shops at 13-17 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden. The street runs parallel to The Strand and was originally part of York Street, which was renamed and renumbered in 1937. The four-storey buildings were erected in the early-eighteenth century and initially used solely for residential accommodation. Alterations were made in the early-nineteenth century to create ground-floor shops. The street is close to the former Covent Garden flower and fruit market. Number 13 is a chemist trading as Littlewood Bros. Ltd where goods and advertisements can be seen in the windows. Numbers 15 and 17 are occupied by flower wholesalers, trading as J. Amand Ltd and Forster and Robins Ltd respectively. The sign for Forster is missing. Jacques Amand was a Dutch bulb trader and set up his first business in London in The Strand in 1927. The company exists today and has a global trade in quality bulbs. Some workmen can be seen outside number 17 with two ladders. The business appears to be closed with a sold sign displayed. The general fabric of the building is in poor condition. There is a partial view of number 19, where a hanging sign can be seen advertising The Stage newspaper. Downlights can be seen hanging above numbers 15 and 17. There is a lorry and some cars parked in the street together with a street lamp. Number 13 is Grade II listed, listing number 1066227. Number 15 is also Grade II listed, listing number 1066228. The buildings remain today with different businesses now trading there.
