Description
View of Strand Lane, Westminster. Looking north with the Old Roman Bath at number 5, on the right behind the curved wall. This is a Grade II listed, listing number 1237102 and actually an early seventeenth-century cistern that was part of the Old Somerset House. The wall is topped with a cast-iron fence that also extends along the lane. To the right of the camera is the rear of the Norfolk Hotel which is a Grade II listed building facing onto Surrey Street. There is a passageway passing under St Clements Watch House which is a Grade II listed building, listing number 1264259. This building was once a parish watch house from the early-eighteenth century. This would have been occupied by a parish beadle who was an early form of policeman. There is a large lamp over the passage which would have originally been lit by gas before conversion to electric. Beyond, on the right, can be seen part of the rear elevation of the closed Aldwych Tube Station which is a Grade II listed building, with the rear of buildings on the Strand to the left, Strand Lane is now a gated passage, and the Roman Bath is in the care of The National Trust. The Watch House and the Norfolk Hotel are now part of Kings College London.
