View of Suffolk Place
Description
Street scene at Suffolk Place, Westminster, viewed from the west side of Haymarket. This shows damage to the buildings caused by the Blitz of World War II. The entire right section of the corner building that was occupied by Humphreys and Crook has been destroyed. All the glass in the various windows has been destroyed or broken. The ground-floor windows of the corner building are boarded up and there is a sign in the left window indicating that Humphreys and Crook Military Tailors have moved to another address close by. On the shop front below this sign can be seen a sign indicating that they were tailors by appointment to the Kings African Rifles. Scaffolding has been erected to the side of the building with a ladder reaching to the top level. There are more scaffolding planks stacked on the pavement ready for use. There is a low temporary barrier in front of the building with two chairs and saw horses in view. The ground-floor pillar to the right corner has been rebuilt in new bricks. There appears to be a ramp of scaffold planks leading into the building. A workman's cycle can be seen leaning against the railings to the right, with what seem to be heavy timbers on the pavement. On the first-floor corner of the building can be seen the street signs for Suffolk Place and Haymarket. The street lamp visible to the right is Grade II listed, listing number 1237159. This entire area has been renovated and modernised, and the corner building is now part of a restaurant on Haymarket.
