Description
Interior of 5 Strand Lane, Westminster. A Grade II listed Roman Bath, listing number 1237102. This is an early seventeenth-century cistern that was part of the old Somerset House. The bath is within a barrel-vaulted room. This shows the squared end of the bath with a set of steps in the left corner, with a narrow ledge along the rear of the bath. The floor of the bath is made of large tiles. There is a bust of gentleman on a plinth against the rear wall with a wooden chair to the right. There is a wooden duck board leaning against the rear wall to the left of the bust, with a square stepping block to its left. The rear wall has half-height timber cladding behind the bust. There are double-height stone benches to the left of the image with two small busts on the upper bench. There is a double row of tiles along the left wall level with the top of the upper bench. At the top of the rear wall can be seen some faded painted decoration. Above this, in the centre of the wall, is a carved stone image, possibly of a deer's head. The bath is now in the care of The National Trust.
