Description
Front elevation of 21 Surrey Street, Westminster, viewed from Temple Place looking north. This is a large five-storey building with a two-storey annex fronting onto Temple Place. The main entrance to the building is on the side of the building facing onto Surrey Street. All the windows have stone mullion surrounds to them with small quoins to the sides. On the side wall, starting at the top-floor level the chimney stacks protrude from the face. There are two dormers on the roof with a gable to the left side with a window central. The gable has an ornate finial to the top. There is a large chimney stack to the right of the gable. There appears to be part of a ladder visible on the roof line at the rear of the middle dormer. At ground level, facing Temple Place, is ornate wrought-iron fencing along the frontage. There is a lamppost, probably a gas one, on the corner of Surrey Street with the street name on the side wall of the annex. There is an early electric number sign adjacent to the lamppost, with a further large sign on the right pavement, adjacent to 19 Surrey Street. There are several lampposts on either side of Surrey Street, with cars parked on the right facing the camera. The building visible at the top of Surrey Street facing the camera is Australia House. 21 Surrey Street has since been demolished and a new building called Macadam House has been constructed which forms part of Kings College London.
