Title
House in Surrey Street
Description
Front elevation of 24 Surrey Street, Westminster, looking south towards the River Thames. This is a Grade II listed building, listing number 1237166 built in 1891-1897 by John Dunn for the Arundel Estate. Originally built as the Queens and Norfolk Hotels. This is a large four-storey and basement building with attic rooms. The entrance for what was Queens Hotel is nearest the camera, with the entrance for the Union Society being the farthest one. Both entrances have ornate porches to them, with the furthest one having a canopy out over the pavement. There are three large bays to the ground floor with a further two bay windows to the first floor, with a large window in the centre. The balcony to the ground-floor bays has an ornate balustrade along the front. The two second-floor bays have ornate balustrades to the top. There is a flagpole projecting from the front of the building above the nearest second-floor bay. All the windows to the building have ornate surrounds to them. In front of the building is a wrought-iron fence protecting the basement void, and the fence panels are stepped up the hill. There is an ornate lamp column in the pavement, this would have originally been illuminated by gas. The rear of a parked motor car is visible on the left of the image. These buildings are now called Chesham Building of Kings College London and the canopy of the furthest entrance has since been removed.
