Title
Houses in Surrey Street
Description
Front elevation of 4-5 Surrey Street, Westminster. Number 4 is a large double-fronted shop occupied by The Strand Watch Company, who were 'Scientific Instrument Makers and Opticians'. They also carried out repairs as shown by the sign fixed to the front of the building above the door. The shop door is set in the centre of the left window with a metal grill over the glass. All the windows have displays of various clocks and watches, and the left window has various types of watch straps on display. There is a single narrow window to the first floor at the left end of the building with two large windows to the right. No 5 Surrey Street is Bradshaw House. Bradshaws were famous for publishing a railway guide from 1839 to 1961. The main door to the building is visible at the left end, set central in the large window, with a similar window to the right. Both these windows have semi-circular tops to them. There are two large windows to the first floor immediately above the ground-floor windows. There is a large cornice along the entire frontage of this building with ornate decoration to the underside. A series of large dormer windows can be seen on the roof line above the cornice. These buildings and the adjacent ones visible have been demolished and a modern block has been built in their place.
