Description
Front elevation of 23 Surrey Street, Westminster, looking north. This is a large four-storey building with a basement and attic rooms. Built 1891-1897 as part of the Arundel Estate by John Dunn. The main entrance is set in the centre of the frontage with a flight of steps from street level. There is a sign with the number 23 fixed to one side of the steps. The door is set back under an ornate arched arcade with circular pillars supporting it. There is an ornate balustrade to the front of the roof of the arcade, with large bay windows to the ground and first floors at each end of the building. The tops of the bays have an ornate balustrade to them. There are large windows to the second floor of the building. On the third floor are very large windows, the one above the bays have a semi-circular top. All the windows to the building have ornate surrounds to them and there are large ornate Dutch-style gables on the roof. The front of the building at street level has a wrought-iron fence in front of the basement. This building has since been demolished and replaced with a modern building known as Macadam Building and is part of Kings College London.
