Title
Cromwell House in Surrey Street
Description
View of Cromwell House at 6-9 Surrey Street, Westminster, taken from outside the old Piccadilly Railway Station. The main entrance to the building is nearest the camera. There is a set of large double doors with the right door slightly ajar. There are two further doors to the front of the building. These appear to be entrances to a restaurant called The Surrey Restaurant. There is a large illuminated sign above the furthest door. Between the two doors are two large windows with curved tops. These windows have curtains covering the lower half of the window. There are metal railings to the front of the building, stepping down at each section, which shows how steep the street is. The ground floor front of the building is built in a block design. The floors above are of a plain design. There are four large rectangular windows to the first floor. These are set back into the front and have lintels to the top that step out from the building. There are four large windows to the second floor, the central section of each has an arched top. These arched sections have ornate laurel designs to them. There is a ladder to the right of the roof line which is fixed to the chimney stack. There is a further ladder attached to the left chimney stack. Both these ladders have handrails. These stacks are on the roof of the adjacent public house on the corner of Surrey Street and Howard Street. There is a lady adjacent to the entrance looking down Surrey Street. There is a bicycle secured to the railings on the extreme right and several motor cars and a delivery van are parked on the street. There is a traffic meter at the rear of the Jaguar parked on the street with a lamppost in front of it. In the distance on the left is 17 Surrey Street and the Howard Hotel. All the buildings on the left of the image have been demolished and Howard Street has since gone. The area is now covered by a large modern building.
